David W. Dole

Independent Marketing and Advertising Professional
creator of the Industry Standard Coding Identification (ISCI ) system

David was born October 18, 1914 in Minneapolis, the son of George A. and Hugh Ella “Helen” (Brock) Dole.  He graduated from West High School in Minneapolis in 1932.  He was married to Katherine E. Turner, who preceded him in death in 2008. In 1937 he began working for Henri Hurst & McDonald in Chicago and from 1947 - 1950 worked for C.E. Hooper in New York.  The family returned to Chicago in 1950 and David continued working in advertising for the Leo Burnett Co.  At Leo Burnett, he served as Vice President.  After his retirement, he lived in Des Plaines, IL and later moved to Northfield. 

David created the ISCI (Industry Standard Coding Identification) system for all television commercials, which was adopted as the industry’s standard in 1970 and continues today as Ad-ID.  He was Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, IL-United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.

On January 28, 2016, David died at Friendship Village in Bloomington, IL at the age of 101.

David is survived by three sons: Brian Dole in Eden Prairie, MN; Kevin and wife Marion Dole in Sherman Oaks, CA; and Gary and wife Cyndi Dole in Naperville, IL.  He is also survived by six grandchildren: Caitlin(wife Tina Bernett); Elena, Eric; Joshua (wife Christy Azzarello), Elizabeth (husband Bobby Heptinstall), & Hannah and two great grandchildren: Stella and Britton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; a brother Gordon Dole; and a sister Dorothy Reinhardt.

Funeral services for David will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 beginning at 2 PM at Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel, Minneapolis.  Visitation will be from 1:30 PM until the time of the service on Saturday.  Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.  Arrangements are being handled by Bierman Funeral Home, Northfield.
